“I would’ve been fined another $80,000” – Reilly Opelka discloses hefty Indian Wells fine after Holger Rune’s ‘hindrance’ claim in Miami Open 2R
Reilly Opelka recently disclosed that he was hit with a massive $80,000 fine for voicing concerns about the lights at the 2025 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. His revelation came after his second-round victory over Holger Rune at the ongoing 2025 Miami Open, where Rune raised a complaint similar to the one Opelka had made in Indian Wells.
Following his hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Holger Rune in Miami, Reilly Opelka was asked about Rune’s complaint to the chair umpire regarding the sudden glare of the lights during a point.
Opelka acknowledged Rune’s grievance as “valid” before revealing that he had been fined $80,000 for making a similar complaint during his first-round loss to Roman Safiullin at the 2025 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
“I don’t know. It was valid. If the lights bug him, they bug him. I don’t think he’s making anything up. He played within the rules to do the video review. There was no foul play on his side,” Opelka said.
Reilly Opelka went on to suggest that if he had been the one to raise the objection instead of Holger Rune, he would have faced yet another $80,000 fine.
“If that were me I probably would’ve been fined another 80 G’s like I did last week at Indian Wells . They couldn’t figure out how to turn on the lights. I asked for them. And then boom, I got slapped with a nice fine. So I’m playing for free this week,” he added.
After overcoming No. 11 seed Holger Rune at the Miami Open, Reilly Opelka will now take on No. 20 seed Tomas Machac in the third round of the prestigious Masters 1000 tournament.
WATCH: Novak Djokovic celebrates after winning staring contest with a hawk in amusing scenes at Miami Open

Novak Djokovic appeared in high spirits as he prepared for his 2025 Miami Open campaign. The Serbian star was spotted playfully engaging in a lighthearted stare-off with nature itself.
Djokovic was anticipated to have a stronger 2025 season after a challenging year on the court. In 2024, he failed to win a Tour-level title for the first time since 2005. The 24-time Grand Slam champion had an impressive run at the Australian Open, reaching his twelfth semifinal in Melbourne. However, his campaign ended unexpectedly when he retired after the first set against Alexander Zverev.
Aside from his strong showing in Melbourne, Djokovic has struggled to make an impact in 2025. In his last two tournaments, he suffered early exits in his opening matches. He fell to Matteo Berrettini at the Qatar Open and then lost to Botic Van De Zandschulp at the BNP Paribas Open. This marked the second consecutive year that Djokovic was defeated by a lucky loser at Indian Wells.
Despite his recent struggles, Djokovic appeared in high spirits ahead of his Miami Open campaign. In a playful moment, he engaged in a staring contest with a hawk. The bird eventually gave in, flying away, prompting a victorious fist pump from the Serbian star. The entertaining incident can be seen in the following video.
