ESPN needs to get rid of Chris Evert & John McEnroe ASAP, they’re so bad” – Fans frustrated by American duo’s ‘insufferable’ US Open 2024 commentary
Chris Evert and John McEnroe have faced renewed criticism for their commentary at the 2024 US Open, with many tennis enthusiasts voicing their desire for the pair to be removed from the broadcast team. The two American tennis icons have often been the subject of backlash for their polarizing remarks, especially during major tournaments like the Grand Slams.
Frustration with Chris Evert and John McEnroe’s commentary has been steadily growing throughout the season. At the French Open, McEnroe was criticized for his comment about Iga Swiatek “throwing on a little makeup” and for seeming unfamiliar with players ranked outside the top 10.
The criticism continued at Wimbledon, where the seven-time Major champion faced backlash for his perceived “ignorance” and lack of insight during the women’s final. In the same match, Chris Evert was accused of being “racist” due to her repeated mispronunciation of Jasmine Paolini’s name, with no apparent effort to correct herself.
Their contentious commentary has continued to provoke frustration among fans at the US Open. McEnroe faced criticism for “badmouthing” Jannik Sinner and questioning the ITIA’s decision regarding the Italian’s doping case. Meanwhile, Evert was condemned for remarks such as suggesting Karolina Muchova “plays like a guy,” a perceived “racist” comment about Naomi Osaka’s outfit, and displaying “painful bias” in favor of Coco Gauff during her fourth-round defeat to Emma Navarro.
The most recent controversy arose during the US Open semifinals when Evert described Aryna Sabalenka’s 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over Emma Navarro as the best women’s match of the tournament.
This comment was the last straw for many fans, who felt that there were several superior matches during the tournament. Consequently, there have been increasing calls for Chris Evert to be removed from the broadcast and for John McEnroe to be dismissed as well.
“ESPN needs to get rid of Chris Evert and John McEnroe ASAP, they’re so bad, lack knowledge about tennis outside of slams, and do not offer much insight at all,” one fan posted.

“Evert, McEnroe and Drysdale need to ride off into the sunset together. ESPN has way better commentators on the bench. Ones who actually add value instead of serving up empty cliche after cliche,” another fan chimed in.
“Chrissie just says any damn thing. I need her gone from the booth just like the McEnroes,” said another.
Fans continued to complain about the “insufferable” commentary and the apparent subpar tennis analysis from the ESPN commentary crew, including Evert and McEnroe.
“This is my regularly scheduled tweet to complain about how insufferable the ESPN tennis broadcast crew is at the grand slams. That’s it. That’s the tweet,” one fan commented.
“With this quality of tennis analysis ESPN might as well put Stephen A Smith and Pat McAfee in the booth,” another fan wrote.
“If anyone’s listening, please let Chris Fowler and Chrissie Evert know that they can shut up every now and then, and absolutely no one would complain,” said yet another.
