Draw Jasmin Open Monastir 2024 featuring Mertens, Burel, Parry and Cristian
The Jasmin Open Monastir, scheduled from September 9-15, 2024, will be the third edition of this WTA 250 tournament in Tunisia. Elise Mertens, a two-time champion of the event, will be competing again at the Tennis Club of Monastir on outdoor hard courts.
In the singles draw of the Jasmin Open Monastir, featuring 32 players, over $260,000 in prize money will be distributed. The main players in the tournament include Clara Burel, Diane Parry, Alycia Parks, and Elise Mertens, who is the top seed as the two-time defending champion.
The Jasmin Open Monastir was introduced in 2022 to replace the tournaments previously held in China, which were canceled following the disappearance of Peng Shuai. Peng Shuai had accused Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual violence in November 2021, leading to significant controversy and the suspension of those events.
In the previous editions of the Jasmin Open Monastir, Elise Mertens claimed the title both in 2022 and 2023. She won the 2022 title with a dominant performance against Alize Cornet (6-2, 6-0) and repeated her success in 2023 with another commanding victory over Jasmine Paolini (6-3, 6-0). As the world No. 35, Mertens will aim for her third consecutive title in Tunisia and will face Anastasia Zakharova (No. 132) in the first round.
It looks like Clara Burel and Diane Parry are well-positioned in their respective matchups. Burel, as the second seed, should be favored against Marina Bassols Ribera, who is still gaining experience at the Tour level. Parry’s draw also seems favorable, with an initial match against wildcard Chirza Bechri and then potentially facing either a qualifier or Suzan Lamens, which gives her a strong opportunity for a deep run. Both players are in promising positions to advance further in the tournament.
Nadia Podoroska’s debut against a qualifier could set her up for a challenging second-round clash with Alycia Parks, provided Parks can get past Yuriko Miyazaki. This match-up could be particularly intriguing given the potential for a high level of competition. In the other first-round matches, the 8th seed Anna Blinkova is up against Sara Sorribes Tormo, which should be a closely contested match given their rankings. Additionally, the match between Ann Li and Kristina Mladenovic is noteworthy, as Mladenovic’s experience and past top-10 status could provide a significant test for Li.
